University of Kansas Medical Center – Health Education Building (KUMC-HEB)

With this “house behind glass”, the architects have pulled off a spectacular design that turns the view into an experience. Two space capsule-like rounded structures arise in the interior, surrounded by a large glass cube resembling a lantern box. They are embedded in cages made of terracotta coloured ceramic tubes – baguettes with a round cross-section – that allow a view of the whirl of activity behind them. Just as the cube stands on a recoiling base, the “baskets” are also anchored on a substructure – when lit up in the darkness, they look as if they are hovering.
