The Francis Crick Institute
This biomedical research institute has moved into new premises in the London Borough of Camden. A strong architectural relationship is established between the new building and the surrounding historic buildings. Both the brickwork and the strikingly designed roof are reminiscent of the neighbouring St Pancras railway station. The façade is constructed from TERRART®-Solid panels, which are solid ceramic elements cast onto concrete. Three harmonious natural hues together engage in a tasteful play of colours, with the base rendered in a darker tone from the same colour scheme. The various architectural details were rendered through the use of numerous moulded elements and special cuts. The most eye-catching aspect of this new building is the arched, two-segment roof, which not only is decorative but also accommodates a combined heat and power system and solar panels that meet the most stringent ecological and energy-performance standards.
