Public Safety Building, Salt Lake City

This remarkable public building in Utah, situated right in the heart of Salt Lake City’s administrative quarter, is the new home of the fire department and police headquarters. Divided into two sections – one open to the public, the other for staff only – the building invites citizens to use the rooms to meet and interact with the local safety and security forces. The building is especially outstanding when it comes to energy efficiency: the Public Safety Building is the country’s first major administrative building to meet the “zero energy” standard. Energy saving considerations also played a role in the decision to use a terracotta prefabricated system for the cladding on three exterior walls. The colour scheme is in keeping with the sandstone facade of the neighbouring city council building: ceramic panels in different gradations of this colour scheme produce a random pattern on this futuristic-looking building. Recycled concrete steel was used as reinforcement to ensure that the building meets anti-terror requirements.
