While the architecture of the interiors has been designed to create ideal exhibition situations the external facade has been conceived to be explicit of the role of this museum as a place for living art. Thus a poly-chromatic building skin has been developed that acts almost like a large scale abstract painting. This skin plays with the perception of the scale and the plasticity of the building. The overall envelope is seemingly divided into three interlocking volumes through the demarcation of different color fields. When viewed from close by each of these fields can in turn be seen to comprise a composition of seven different colors. Seen from afar these color families each merge into one overall neutral tone – each with a different degree of lightness and a certain variation of hue.
